Our organization is committed to providing higher education scholarships to Maury High School seniors. Please consider donating to one of our scholarships to support our graduates!
Founded in 1986, the original scholarship is believed to be among the first charitable foundations in the country created to benefit a single public high school. Attorney Robert Nusbaum (class of 1941) of Willams Mullen teamed up with Vincent Thomas (class of 1939), a former Norfolk mayor, to lead the original effort.
When Oscar B. “O.B” Ferebee, Jr., Class of 1936 passed away in 2010, his wife Sandra wanted to celebrate his memory. O.B. always spoke fondly of his time at Maury High School. Mrs. Ferebee felt a scholarship in his name for a deserving senior was best. The Maury Foundation is proud to announce the “Oscar B. Ferebee, Jr.” Endowed Scholarship.
O.B. joined the Navy as a second-class storekeeper in 1941 later joining the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet and later becoming a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army coast Artillery Corps. He returned home in 1947 as a captain. O.B. joined Goodman Segar Hogan Real Estate the spring of 1947. In 1950 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve as a captain. Two weeks later his unit was called up for active duty in Korea. After the Korean War, O.B. returned home and back to Goodman Segar Hogan where he later became a managing partner. The company and the area grew and by the mid-1970’s GSH Residential had offices throughout Hampton Roads. O.B. had a vision for the area and made it happen.
The Paxton-Beale Family generously donated to the Maury Foundation after a family member and former alumni passed away.
